Where or When is a 1937 show tune from the Rodgers and Hart musical Babes in Arms. It was first performed by Ray Heatherton and Mitzi Green, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. Published in 1937 by Chappell & Co., the song appears in the Broadway show and later in the 1939 film version. A popular early recording was Hal Kemp and His Orchestra in 1937. In 1959 the pop doo wop group Dion and the Belmonts released a single of Where or When from the album Presenting Dion and the Belmonts, with the B side That’s My Desire, on Laurie Records. The tune has become part of the Great American Songbook and has been covered by many artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Lyrically the song evokes déjà vu, suggesting two people may have met before even though the moment is uncertain, ending with the idea that the mind can play tricks.
