Woody ’n’ You is a 1942 jazz standard written by Dizzy Gillespie as an homage to Woody Herman. It was first recorded on record in 1944 by Coleman Hawkins with Budd Johnson leading the session, and the piece is sometimes called Algo Bueno; Hawkins’ Rainbow Mist collection features that 1944 date. The tune is a 32-bar AABA in a bebop style with a rich sequence of ii–V progressions and half-diminished chords, reflecting Gillespie’s early bebop and his growing Afro-C Cuban influence. Miles Davis recorded it three times—on Miles Davis Volume 1, Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet, and Amsterdam Concert—along with many other greats such as Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Mingus, and The Three Sounds, making it a lasting jazz standard.
