Yesterday is a Beatles song written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon-McCartney. It was released on the 1965 UK album Help! in August 1965 and as a US single on September 13, 1965, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. The recording features McCartney on vocal and acoustic guitar with a string quartet, making it essentially the band's first solo performance. The track is a melancholic ballad about lost love, and its melody reportedly came to McCartney in a dream; the working title was Scrambled Eggs. Yesterday has become one of the most covered songs in history and has received many honors, including induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1997 and high rankings on lists of the century's greatest songs. It later appeared on the US album Yesterday and Today (1966) and the UK EP Yesterday (1966).
