You Don't Know What Love Is is a ballad from the Great American Songbook with music by Gene de Paul and lyrics by Don Raye, written in 1941 for the Abbott and Costello film Keep 'Em Flying. It was performed by Carol Bruce in the movie, but the number was cut from the release; it later appeared in Behind the Eight Ball (1942) with Bruce again singing it. The song was first recorded by Carol Bruce in 1941, and Ella Fitzgerald issued the first released version in November 1941. After Miles Davis recorded an instrumental in 1954, it became a jazz standard, with notable versions by Dinah Washington, Anita O'Day with Jimmy Rowles and Tal Farlow, Billie Holiday, Sonny Rollins and Chet Baker. It has appeared on several albums, including Miles Davis Walkin' (1954) and Chet Baker Sings and Plays (1955).
