You Stepped Out of a Dream is a 1940 pop and jazz standard composed by Nacio Herb Brown with lyrics by Gus Kahn. It became a centerpiece in the 1941 musical film Ziegfeld Girl, where it was sung by Tony Martin and is linked to an iconic image of Lana Turner walking down a grand staircase, though Turner never officially recorded the song. The tune has since been widely covered on many albums by artists such as Nat King Cole, Stan Getz, Julie London, Johnny Mathis, Peggy Lee, Glenn Miller with Ray Eberle, Dexter Gordon, and Samara Joy. It has also appeared in film, notably in The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) during a murder scene, and was added to the 2012 revival of Singin' in the Rain.
