Penthouse Serenade, also known as "When We're Alone", is a popular song with music by the American composer Will Jason and English lyrics by the American lyricist Val Burton. The first recording was made on 8 December 1931 by Tom Gerun and His Orchestra, with a vocal by Scrappy Lambert, and the single "When We're Alone" was released in 1932.
Early recordings from 1932 came from Smith Ballew, Ben Selvin, Ruth Etting and Roy Fox. Bob Crosby and His Orchestra and Mildred Bailey followed, then Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole, whose 1952 version is one of the song's notable later recordings. Tony Bennett recorded it in 1959 and Marianne Faithfull in 1987, and the song has continued to attract new interpreters over the decades.
