Info

Das Stück

Surrey with the Fringe on Top is a classic show tune from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! (1943). Composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, it is sung by Curly and Laurey as he describes taking her out in a surrey with fringe on top to a prairie social. The song appears in the original Broadway production, which opened in 1943 at the St. James Theatre and is preserved on the 1943 original Broadway cast recording. In jazz circles it became a 1940s standard, with Ahmad Jamal recording it in 1952 and Miles Davis drawing on that version in the 1950s. The piece sits in the show tune genre and remains popular in both musical theatre and jazz repertoires.
