"There Must Be More to Life Than This" is a song written and composed by Freddie Mercury, who wrote both the music and the English lyrics. It is the eighth track on Mercury's debut solo album, Mr. Bad Guy, released on 29 April 1985 by Columbia Records. The album was produced by Reinhold Mack and Mercury and recorded at Musicland in West Germany. It is Mercury's only solo studio album and came out during Queen's hiatus. The original recording runs about three minutes.
Queen first recorded the song in 1982 for the album Hot Space, but it did not make the album. In 1983, Michael Jackson and Mercury recorded demos at the Jackson family's Hayvenhurst compound. The lyrics were unfinished at that point, and Jackson improvised. After Jackson's death in 2009, Brian May and Roger Taylor released the song as a Queen track featuring Michael Jackson on the 2014 album Queen Forever. That version was produced by William Orbit and built on the original Hot Space backing track.
