Iris is a jazz composition by Wayne Shorter (born 1933, died 2023). Its original recording was made by the Miles Davis quintet, the second great quintet, with Davis on trumpet, Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. Recorded on 22 January 1965 at Columbia's Hollywood studios, it was first released on 16 August 1965 as track B2 of the album E.S.P. on Columbia. The album is listed under jazz, hard bop, modal and post bop, and its pieces challenge standard 32-bar forms. The original is instrumental. The tune has since been recorded by many artists, including Kirk Lightsey and Harold Danko, the Fred Hersch Trio, the Mat Maneri Trio, the Rachel Z Trio and the Paul Williamson Quartet. Other artists have also adapted it with vocals.
