Sail Away is a jazz standard composed by the American trumpeter and flugelhornist Tom Harrell, who is credited as its sole writer. It is an instrumental with no lyrics. Harrell recorded it as the title track of his 1989 album Sail Away for Contemporary Records, with Joe Lovano on saxophone on four tracks, James Williams on piano and John Abercrombie on guitar. The album was reissued in 2003 with two bonus tracks, and its reviews praised its mainstream jazz arrangements.
The title track has become a jazz standard and has been described as one of the finest jazz sambas ever written. Later versions have been recorded by Phil Woods, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Kenny Barron and Ron Carter's Great Big Band.
