"In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town" is a popular song with English lyrics, with music by Ira Schuster and Jack Little and words by Joe Young. It was published in 1932 and became a dance-band and jazz-age standard about a town. The original recording was made in 1932 by Ted Lewis and His Band and released as a single. The band also performed the song in the film The Crooner, and their version reached number one for about ten weeks.
Later versions include Johnny Long and His Orchestra, whose 1946 recording sold a million copies and was a revision of his 1940 version. Somethin' Smith and the Redheads brought the song back into the charts in 1956. Other notable recordings came from Doris Day in 1951, Big Bill Broonzy in 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis in 1958 and 1959, Bobby Vinton in 1960 and Fats Domino in 1961.
