Falling in Love Again has music by Friedrich Hollaender (Frederick Hollander) and English lyrics by Sammy Lerner. Hollaender also wrote the German lyrics, under the title Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt, and according to his autobiography he wrote the music first and the text as a provisional draft. The song was written in 1930 for the film Der blaue Engel (The Blue Angel), where Marlene Dietrich sang it as Lola Lola. The film team also shot an English-language version in which it is sung as Falling in Love Again.
It is a slow waltz in 3/4 time in an AABA form of 32 bars. The first printed edition is in F major, while the film uses D major. Dietrich recorded it on 6 February 1930; the first record, released by Victor in the United States that year, had Naughty Lola on the B-side. She re-recorded it in 1939 with Victor Young and His Orchestra, and it became her signature song. Comedian Harmonists recorded a German version in 1930, and later versions include those by Billie Holiday (1940), Nina Simone (1966), Kevin Ayers (1976) and The Beatles, live in Hamburg in 1962 (released 1977).
