"Nothing Personal" is an instrumental jazz tune written by the pianist, composer and producer Don Grolnick (1947-1996), who is its sole credited writer. The piece has no lyrics. It was first recorded by the saxophonist Michael Brecker for his debut album, Michael Brecker, released on Impulse! in 1987. The album was recorded in New York and produced by Brecker and Grolnick together. On it, the tune is the first track of side two, running 5:29, with Jack DeJohnette on drums, Pat Metheny, Kenny Kirkland and Charlie Haden. Grolnick was a member of Steps Ahead and Dreams with Brecker. The album received favourable reviews from AllMusic and The Penguin Guide to Jazz. Later recordings include versions by Grolnick himself in 1990, the Quatuor Ébène, Terri Lyne Carrington and Stefon Harris.
