Stormy Weather (Keeps Rainin' All the Time) is a 1933 torch song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Ted Koehler. Ethel Waters first sang it at the Cotton Club nightclub in Harlem in 1933 and recorded it that year for Brunswick. The Cotton Club revue toured later that year as the Stormy Weather Revue, with Adelaide Hall singing the song. Leo Reisman's orchestra, with Arlen as vocalist, had the biggest hit on records. Comedian Harmonists released a German cover, "Ohne Dich", in September 1933. Elisabeth Welch sang the song in London, and Frances Langford recorded it in 1933.
Lena Horne sang it in the 1943 film Stormy Weather, an all-star show for World War II soldiers, and her 1941 RCA Victor recording is in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Waters' 1933 recording entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003 and the National Recording Registry in 2004. Later performers include Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan. The song is a jazz standard and a pop song.
