Serene is an instrumental post-bop jazz tune composed by Eric Dolphy, who is its only credited writer. No lyrics are known for it. Dolphy recorded the original performance himself, playing bass clarinet, in New York on 15 August 1960. The recording was released in 1961 on the Prestige album Out There, catalogue number Prestige 7652. The tune is a short, lyrical piece, and it has attracted a number of later interpreters. Chico Hamilton and Euphoria, Aki Takase and Rudi Mahall, and Lovano and Osby have each recorded their own versions. Harold Danko, Potsa Lotsa and Alexander von Schlippenbach have also recorded it.
