"Cocaine" is a blues rock song written and composed by J.J. Cale. Cale wrote and recorded it in 1976 for his album Troubadour, and it was first released as a single in 1977, with "Hey Baby" on the A-side. Cale's version reached number one in New Zealand for a week and charted in Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Germany and Australia. Eric Clapton recorded the song for his 1977 album Slowhand, produced by Glyn Johns, and released it as a single in November 1977, with "Lay Down Sally" as the A-side. It became one of Clapton's most popular songs. His band on the recording included George Terry, Dick Sims, Carl Radle and Jamie Oldaker, while Cale's version featured Reggie Young and Kenny Buttrey. A live Clapton version reached number 30 on the US Hot 100 in 1980 as the B-side of "Tulsa Time". The song has been covered by many artists.
