"Please Send Me Someone to Love" is a blues ballad written and composed by Percy Mayfield, who also sang it in a soft ballad style. Percy Mayfield and Orchestra recorded it on August 16, 1950, at Universal in Hollywood, California, with Art Rupe as producer. It was released in September 1950 as a 78rpm single on Specialty Records (SP 375), with "Strange Things Happening" on the B-side; the recording runs 2:53. The song spent 27 weeks on Billboard's R&B chart, reaching number one there for two weeks, and became Mayfield's most successful song. It also peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Covers include Dinah Washington (1951), The Moonglows (a hit in 1957), Fred Neil (1967), Ruth Brown (1969), Freddie King, Paul Butterfield's Better Days (1973) and The Animals (1977). Johnny Diesel and the Injectors recorded it in 1989 for the soundtrack of the Australian film The Delinquents, and their version reached number 11 on the ARIA chart in 1990.
