"País Tropical" ("Tropical Country") is a Brazilian song written by Jorge Ben Jor, who composed both the music and the lyrics. Ben first recorded it in 1969 for his self-titled album Jorge Ben, released on Philips and produced by Manoel Barenbein. It became the biggest success of his career. The song is usually classed as samba, soul and samba-rock. Wilson Simonal recorded it on 22 July 1969 with his band Som Três, in an arrangement by César Camargo Mariano, and released it as a single on Odeon that August. It was the biggest hit of Simonal's career and reached No. 1 in the IBOPE chart in Brazil in 1969. Gal Costa recorded it in December 1969 for her album Gal, and Ben re-recorded it in 1977 for the album Tropical. Other notable versions include those by Dom Salvador, Luiz Eça, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 (1971), Ivete Sangalo and Daniela Mercury. Juca Chaves wrote a satire, "Paris Tropical", which Ben answered. A lawsuit concerned a coda that borrowed from Pedro Caetano's "Eu Sou Flamengo".
