Dream a Little Dream of Me is a 1930 song with music by Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt and lyrics by Gus Kahn. Andre and Schwandt were later credited as composers after a manuscript dated 6 January 1930, in the hand of Milton Adolphus, who reportedly sold the song outright that year. Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra made the first recording on 16 February 1931 for Brunswick, with Nelson singing, and Wayne King's version for Victor followed two days later. It became an early signature tune of Kate Smith, and in 1950 several versions appeared, including recordings by Frankie Laine and Jack Owens that reached the US top 20 and one by Ella Fitzgerald with Louis Armstrong. The best-known later version is by Cass Elliot with the Mamas & the Papas, from the 1968 album The Papas & the Mamas; it reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the group's last major hit. The melody is in C major in early versions, and the song is often described as both a lullaby and a love song with a comforting, childlike quality.
