"Poker Face" is a 2008 synth-pop and dance-pop song by American singer Lady Gaga, released on 23 September 2008 as the second single from her debut album The Fame, with "Just Dance" as its B-side. Lady Gaga wrote it with RedOne (Nadir Khayat), who also produced it at Record Plant in Los Angeles. Set in G# minor in common time at about 120 BPM, it is darker in tone than "Just Dance" and built on a stuttering hook that references Boney M.'s "Ma Baker". Most critics praised its robotic hook and chorus.
It debuted at No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100, reached No. 1 in April 2009 and topped charts in about twenty countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany and Australia. It sold over 14 million copies and was the best-selling single of 2009 worldwide. The song earned Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, and for Best Dance Recording. Ray Kay directed its music video, which premiered on 22 October 2008. Lady Gaga performed the song on American Idol season 8, the Monster Ball tour and the Super Bowl LI halftime show. Covers by Weezer, the Glee cast, Idina Menzel and Postmodern Jukebox followed.
