Four in One is a jazz composition by Thelonious Monk, credited to him alone as composer. It is an instrumental tune in AABA form of 32 bars, notable for its many sixteenth notes. It is a contrafact of Five Foot Two, so it is built on the same kind of structure as that earlier song but presents a new composition.
The original recording was made on 23 July 1951 by the Thelonious Monk Quintet during the Genius of Modern Music sessions and was released on the album Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 2 in 1952. Monk later performed the tune live at the Blackhawk and at Lincoln Center, where the concert recording Big Band and Quartet in Concert documents the performance.
Later versions by artists including Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Chick Corea and Gary Burton, Wynton Marsalis and Danilo Perez have brought the tune into the repertoire of other jazz groups.
