"You and the Night and the Music" is a popular song composed by Arthur Schwartz, with lyrics by Howard Dietz, and published in 1934 by Harms Incorporated. It was written for the Broadway revue Revenge with Music, which opened on November 28, 1934. Authors Caryl Brahms and Ned Sherrin describe the musical as an artistic failure that yielded two enduring hits. The original recording was made by Georges Metaxa and Libby Holman. In 1935, popular recordings were released by Libby Holman and by Leo Reisman, with a vocal by Phil Dewey.
The song became an enduring jazz standard, with notable recordings by Frank Sinatra, Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Keith Jarrett, Julie London, Jamie Cullum, Baby Washington and Lennie Niehaus. The Caretaker sampled it on Selected Memories from the Haunted Ballroom (1999). It is sung in English and is classed as a show tune and a jazz standard.
