"I Believe in You" is a show tune with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, written for the 1961 Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The book was by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, based on Shepherd Mead's 1952 book. The show opened on 14 October 1961 at the 46th Street Theatre, ran for 1,417 performances, and won seven Tony Awards and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Robert Morse introduced the song as J. Pierrepont Finch, with Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Reed in the cast. The first recording, by the same performers, was made on 22 October 1961 and appeared on the original cast album that year. The song is a ballad-like pep talk, sung in a self-affirming tone. It went on to a long life in jazz and vocal recordings, including versions by Peggy Lee (1962), Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson, and instrumental versions by Shelly Manne and Bill Evans.
