Heart of Glass is a song by the American new wave band Blondie, written by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein and produced by Mike Chapman. It was the third single from the album Parallel Lines (1978), released in January 1979 by Chrysalis Records, and a 12-inch disco version appeared in December 1978. Harry and Stein had first written an earlier, slower and funkier disco-beat version in 1974-75, called "The Disco Song", inspired by The Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat". The band re-recorded it in a more pop-oriented form at the Record Plant in New York City in June 1978. The title comes from Werner Herzog's 1976 film Heart of Glass, although the group had not seen it. The track is built around a Roland CR-78 drum machine, among the earliest uses of that device in pop, with Roland SH-5 and Minimoog synthesizers and a double-tracked vocal from Harry. Stein said the band regarded it as electro-European, influenced by Kraftwerk, rather than as disco. It reached No. 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100, the UK Singles Chart and Australia.
