"The In Crowd" is a rhythm and blues and soul song written by Billy Page, who composed the music and wrote the lyrics, with the arrangement credited to Gene Page. Singer Dobie Gray recorded the original version at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood in October 1964, produced by Fred Darian. It was released as a single on Charger in November 1964, with "Be a Man" on the B-side, and later appeared on the album Dobie Gray Sings for "In" Crowders That Go "Go-Go". Gray's version reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on the Hot R&B Singles chart in early 1965, as well as number 25 in the United Kingdom and number 8 in Canada.
The best-known version is an instrumental by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, recorded live at Bohemian Caverns in Washington, D.C., in May 1965 and released on Argo that June. It reached number 5 on the Hot 100 and spent three weeks at number 2 on the R&B chart, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009. Later recordings include a 1974 version by Bryan Ferry, which was a UK single reaching number 13, and a 1966 version by The Mamas & the Papas.
