The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else) is a 1924 popular song with music by Isham Jones and lyrics by Gus Kahn, and it became a standard of the swing and jazz repertoire. Isham Jones' Orchestra recorded it on December 21, 1923, at Brunswick Studios in New York, and the song was published on January 7, 1924, by Milton Weil Music Co. of Chicago. Jones later recorded a second version with Al Jolson on lead vocals in Chicago on January 17, 1924. Both versions reached the charts in spring 1924, Jolson's peaking at No. 2 and Jones' at No. 5.
Ted Lewis and His Band recorded the earliest known version on December 6, 1923, released in 1924 as "Twelve O'Clock at Night." Sophie Tucker followed in February 1924. Later recordings include Tommy Dorsey with Frank Sinatra (1940), Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald (both 1941), Bing Crosby (1946), Doris Day (1951), Julie London (1958) and Dean Martin (1966). The song was also used in the films The Last Crooked Mile (1949), I'll See You in My Dreams (1951), a film on Gus Kahn's life with Doris Day, and The Helen Morgan Story (1957).
