Morning Morgantown is the opening track of Ladies of the Canyon, the third studio album by Joni Mitchell, who wrote its music and lyrics and produced the record. All tracks on the album were written by Mitchell. The song runs 3:13 and begins side one. Reprise Records released the album on April 6, 1970, after it was recorded in 1969 and 1970 at A&M Studios in Los Angeles. The title refers to Laurel Canyon, the Los Angeles music scene where Mitchell lived and wrote the songs. The album peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Robert Christgau called it richer lyrically and more compelling musically than her previous work. The song has since been covered by several artists, including Jude, Kiki Ebsen, Bidi Dworkin, Nancy Reed and Spencer Reed, and Jesca Hoop.
