"Superstar" is a 1969 song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. Rita Coolidge came up with the idea, based on her observation of the relationships between female groupies and rock stars in the late 1960s. The song was first recorded as "Groupie (Superstar)" by Delaney & Bonnie and Friends featuring Eric Clapton at A&M Studios in Los Angeles, in September and October 1969, produced by Delaney Bramlett. It was released in December 1969 as the B-side of the single "Comin' Home", on Atco in the United States and on Atlantic elsewhere. The full version appeared in 1972 on the album D&B Together, and it was a bonus track on the 2006 reissue of Clapton's 1970 album. Bonnie Bramlett re-recorded it in 2002 as a slow, piano-based torch song. The best-known versions are those by the Carpenters (1971, soft rock), Luther Vandross (1983) and Sonic Youth (1994, a tribute to the Carpenters). Many artists in different genres have recorded it since, including in adult contemporary, pop rock and soft rock.
