"Twist and Shout" is a 1961 song written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns, who is credited as Bert Russell. The American R&B vocal group The Top Notes first recorded it at Atlantic Studios in New York City on 23 February 1961, with an arrangement by Teddy Randazzo and production by Phil Spector. Their Atlantic single from August 1961 failed to chart.
The Isley Brothers reworked the song for their 1962 album Twist & Shout, produced by Bert Russell, adding gospel-fired soul and the song's iconic bridge. Their Wand single from May 1962 was their first Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 17, and it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. The Beatles recorded it at EMI Studios in London on 11 February 1963, with George Martin as producer and John Lennon on lead vocals. It opened their album Please Please Me, released in the UK on 22 March 1963. Their US single on Tollie in 1964 reached No. 2 on Billboard. The song also appears in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Back to School, both from 1986, and covers by Salt-N-Pepa and Chaka Demus & Pliers charted.
