"Waiting on the World to Change" is a song by American singer-songwriter John Mayer, who wrote the music and lyrics. It was released in 2006 as the lead single from his third studio album, Continuum, on Aware and Columbia. The song is in D, runs 3:18 and is built on a common I-vi-IV-I-V-vi-IV-I progression. It is often classed as soft rock, pop rock, blue-eyed soul and blues rock, with elements of jazz fusion. It won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 49th Grammy Awards, and it was the most played song of 2007 on US mainstream adult contemporary radio. It reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, and was certified platinum in the United States. Critics were divided: The New York Times called it a lovely and anger-free ode to a vaguely dissatisfied generation, while Pitchfork gave it its lowest grade. The music video, directed by Philip Andelman, was shot along the East River with graffiti artists Futura, Tats Cru and Daze. Kidz Bop Kids and Boyce Avenue are among the many artists who have covered the song.
