"The Peacocks" is an instrumental jazz ballad by Jimmy Rowles, the American jazz pianist, vocalist and composer (1918-1996). The tune is written in song form and was published in 1974, the year Rowles first recorded it for the album The Special Magic of Jimmy Rowles. It is the best-known of his compositions, and it is also heard in the soundtrack of Bertrand Tavernier's film Round Midnight.
Later recordings include versions by Stan Getz with Rowles, issued on the 1977 Columbia album Stan Getz Presents Jimmie Rowles - The Peacocks, and by Bill Evans, Gary Foster, John McLaughlin and Esperanza Spalding. The Getz recordings were made in 1975, two years before the album appeared. A vocal version with lyrics by Norma Winstone is titled "A Timeless Place".
