"Remember" is a popular standard with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin, published in 1925. It is a song about nostalgia. Its original recording was made by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra on 9 July 1925 for Victor, issued as the single "You Forgot to Remember". In 1925 and 1926 it had success for Jean Goldkette & His Orchestra, with a vocal by Seymour Simons, for Isham Jones in an instrumental version, and for Cliff Edwards.
The lyric is built on wordplay: Berlin stretches the sound of "forgot" into a longer phrase, then places "forgot" and "remember" at the ends of the next two lines, so the pair closes each line in turn. The song appeared in several films, including Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938, with Alice Faye), Moontide (1942, instrumental), So This Is Love (1953, with Kathryn Grayson), There's No Business Like Show Business (1954, cast including Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey) and Isn't It Shocking? (1973). Later versions include instrumentals by Red Norvo and Benny Goodman, and recordings by Erroll Garner and Johnny Hartman (1950), Billie Holiday (1953), Julie London (1956), Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstine (1957) and Frank Sinatra (1962, arranged by Gordon Jenkins).
