"Never Will I Marry" was written by Frank Loesser, who composed the music and the lyrics in 1960 for the Broadway musical Greenwillow. The book was written by Lesser Samuels and Frank Loesser, based on the novel by B. J. Chute. The show opened on March 8, 1960, at the Alvin Theatre. In the original cast, Anthony Perkins sang the song as Gideon Briggs in Act I, between "Halloweve" and "Greenwillow Christmas". The lyrics are in English.
Later performers include Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Linda Ronstadt and Sheena Easton. The earliest recording known is by Cannonball Adderley featuring Ray Brown and Wes Montgomery, from 1960, and Adderley also released an instrumental version in 1961. In later decades the song became a jazz standard.
