"Dinah" is a popular song with music by Harry Akst and lyrics by Sam M. Lewis and Joe Young, published in 1925. It became a jazz standard through many cover versions. Accounts differ on its first performance: one credits Eddie Cantor, who sang it in 1923 in the show Kid Boots, while another says Ethel Waters introduced it at the Plantation Club on Broadway before it was added to Kid Boots. The first recording was made by The Revelers in September 1925. In 1926, hit versions were released by Ethel Waters, The Revelers, Red Pepper Sam, Cliff Edwards and Fletcher Henderson. Later recordings include those by Louis Armstrong (1930), Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers (1931), Duke Ellington (1932), Cab Calloway (1932), The Boswell Sisters (1934) and Chet Baker (1952). The song also gave a name to the singer Fanny Rose Shore, who became known as Dinah Shore after the disc jockey Martin Block nicknamed her for it.
