The Eternal Triangle is an instrumental jazz tune with no lyrics, written by Sonny Stitt, who is credited as its sole composer. The original performance was recorded on 19 December 1957 in New York by Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, three leading figures of the period. It was first released in January 1959 on the Verve album Sonny Side Up, where it appears as track A2, so the tune reached listeners more than a year after the session. The album is classed under hard bop and soul-jazz.
Many artists have since recorded the tune, among them Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw, Eric Alexander and Jimmy Greene. The title is also commonly given in the shorter catalogue form Eternal Triangle.
