Evidence is an instrumental jazz composition in E-flat by Thelonious Monk, written in 1948. It is a contrafact of the standard "Just You, Just Me", composed by Jesse Greer and Raymond Klages in 1929 for the film Marianne, and it borrows that song's chord progression. Monk first titled the tune "Justice", a pun on "Just Us" and a nod to its model, then renamed it "We Named It Justice" before settling on "Evidence". The original recording was made by The Thelonious Monk Quartet on 2 July 1948 and released on the album Milt Jackson & The Thelonious Monk Quartet. The original has no lyrics, but vocal versions have been recorded by Madeline Eastman in 1994 and Emma Pask in 2002.
Later recordings include versions by Steve Lacy, Jaki Byard, Joey DeFrancesco, Fred Hersch and Wynton Marsalis. Both songs appear on the CD reissue of Monk's 1964 live album Live at the It Club.
