Emily is a jazz ballad, a standard with music by Johnny Mandel and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was written as the title song of the 1964 film The Americanization of Emily, directed by Arthur Hiller from a screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky and starring James Garner and Julie Andrews. The black comedy anti-war film is set in World War II. The song is not sung in the film itself; its vocal version appears on the soundtrack album, and for that reason it could not be nominated for an Academy Award. The original recording was made in June 1964 by an orchestra and choir conducted by Johnny Mandel and released on the soundtrack album. Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones and Andy Williams recorded it in 1964, and Tony Bennett followed in 1966. Bill Evans recorded it in 1967 for Further Conversations with Myself and played it live for years. Other notable recordings include versions by Ramsey Lewis, Paul Desmond, Barbra Streisand, Marvin Gaye and Julian Lage.
