Moonlight in Vermont is a popular song with music by Karl Suessdorf and lyrics by John Blackburn, published in 1944. It is about the U.S. state of Vermont. The original recording, made on 20 September 1944 by Billy Butterfield and His Orchestra with a vocal by Margaret Whiting, was released as a single in November 1944.
Blackburn said the lyric does not rhyme. After the first 12 bars he told Suessdorf to keep the no-rhyme pattern throughout, and each verse, not counting the bridge, is a haiku. The song is considered an unofficial state song of Vermont and is often the first dance at Vermont wedding receptions. It has become a jazz standard, with notable versions by Johnny Smith with Stan Getz, The Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker, Jo Stafford with Paul Weston, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Mel Tormé, Willie Nelson and Seth MacFarlane.
