"What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" is a song with music by Michel Legrand and lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, written for the 1969 film The Happy Ending, where Michael Dees sang it on the soundtrack album. Alan Bergman recalled that Legrand had written eight melodies that did not suit the film, and that Marilyn Bergman then suggested the opening line, on which Legrand built the melody. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song but lost to "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head". It also received a Golden Globe nomination. It is generally classed as a jazz ballad. Sarah Vaughan recorded it in 1972 with Legrand as arranger and conductor, and that track won Legrand the Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist. Later versions include Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were (1974), Frank Sinatra's Some Nice Things I've Missed (1974) and Chris Botti with Sting's To Love Again (2005). It is a standard in the jazz and pop vocal repertoire.
