"Lazy Bird" is a jazz composition written solely by John Coltrane. It is an instrumental with no lyrics. It was first recorded on 15 September 1957 and released on Coltrane's album Blue Train, issued by Blue Note in 1958. Its name is most likely a play on Tadd Dameron's "Lady Bird". The biographer Lewis Porter has proposed a harmonic relationship between "Lady Bird" and the A section, and the bridge is apparently a variation on "Lover Man". The chord progression can be derived from "Lady Bird" through backdoor and tritone substitutions, as analysed by Jason Lyon in 2007. The piece is in the key of G and belongs to the hard bop style. Notable covers include versions by Pat Martino, Woody Herman, Bill Hardman, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Kikoski, as well as an arrangement by Dewey Redman.
