“My Immortal” is a piano power ballad written by Amy Lee and Ben Moody of the American rock band Evanescence when they were 15. Lee composed the music and wrote the lyrics, which she said were mainly Moody’s with a little contribution from her, and she added the bridge. The song is in A major, with the chorus in F-sharp minor, in common time at about 80 bpm, and its vocal range runs from A3 to C#5.
It first appeared on the album Fallen (Wind-up Records) on 4 March 2003, and was released as the album’s third single on 8 December 2003 after featuring on the Daredevil soundtrack. The single adds guitar, drums and bass and a string arrangement by David Campbell. The song was generally well received, reaching the top ten in over ten countries and number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100, and topping the charts in Canada, Greece and Portugal. It was certified Platinum in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 47th Grammy Awards. Its black-and-white video, directed by David Mould in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, earned an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Rock Video. An alternative version appears on Synthesis (2017), and many artists have covered the song.
