"Ordinary People" is a soul ballad by American singer John Legend, written and produced by Legend (John Stephens) and will.i.am (Will Adams). It was released by GOOD Music and Columbia Records on April 7, 2005, as the second single from Legend's debut studio album Get Lifted (2004). The song is built on stark piano, and its main chord progression is derived from the introduction of Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour". The single version runs 4:01 and the album version 4:41. Critics were overwhelmingly positive, praising the piano and Legend's vocal range. At the 48th Annual Grammy Awards it was nominated for Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and won the last of these. It reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. In the UK it peaked at No. 27 in 2005 and returned to No. 4 in 2012 after re-entering the chart. The music video, directed by Chris Milk, shows Legend at a grand piano in an all-white space while couples and families fight and reconcile. In April 2012 Jaz Ellington performed the song on The Voice UK.
