"Tonight" is a song by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, written for the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story, which adapts Romeo and Juliet to 1950s New York. It began as a section of the "Tonight Quintet", a number near the end of Act I, and its lyrics convey the lovers' anticipation of reuniting later that evening. For the balcony scene on the fire escape, Arthur Laurents replaced "One Hand, One Heart" with the quintet music sung as "Tonight". The original Broadway cast featured Larry Kert as Tony and Carol Lawrence as Maria. In the 1961 film, Marni Nixon dubbed Natalie Wood and Jimmy Bryant dubbed Richard Beymer. The 2021 Spielberg film featured Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort singing the song, which was released as a digital single on 1 December 2021. Ferrante & Teicher's 1961 instrumental was the first version to chart in Billboard, reaching No. 8 on the Hot 100, and Eddie Fisher recorded it in 1960.
