Captain Marvel is an instrumental jazz fusion piece written by Chick Corea. It has no lyrics, runs 4:53, and is a fast Latin tune. Corea recorded it with his band Return to Forever for the album Light as a Feather, released by Polydor in January 1973. The album was recorded in October 1972 at IBC Studios in London and produced by Corea. Return to Forever was an American jazz fusion band that Corea founded in 1972, and Light as a Feather was the first studio album credited to the group under his leadership. The line-up on the record included Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira. Airto plays percussion, and Purim sings without words during the main riff. The track is the third on the album. The album won the 1972 Playboy Jazz Album of the Year award and is listed among the greatest jazz albums in several polls. Stan Getz took the tune's name for his 1975 album Captain Marvel, recorded in March 1972 with Corea, Clarke and Moreira as guests. Other versions include recordings by Urbie Green, Jack Wilkins, and Corea, Clarke and White.
