"Tell Me Something Good" is a song written by Stevie Wonder, who wrote both its music and its words. Rufus, featuring Chaka Khan as lead vocalist, recorded it as a funk single released in June 1974 by ABC Records. Produced by Bob Monaco and Rufus, it appeared on the album Rags to Rufus (1974), with "Smokin' Room" as its B-side. It was the first and only hit credited to Rufus. In the United States it reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the R&B chart, and it was number 1 on Cash Box for one week. It is among the earliest hits to use the guitar talk box, played by Tony Maiden. The sound is described as funk, funk rock and disco. The single won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. Rolling Stone praised Khan's vocals, and AllMusic noted that Wonder had given away a tune he could have recorded himself. Later versions include recordings by Ronnie Laws and Phil Upchurch (1975), Robbie Nevil (1991), Pink (2006) and a 2021 dance version by Ewan McVicar, which reached number 15 in the UK. The song has also been used in television series such as Will & Grace and That '70s Show.
