"I'm a Believer" is a 1966 pop rock song written by Neil Diamond, who composed the music and the lyrics. It was first recorded by the American group the Monkees, with lead vocals by Micky Dolenz. Jeff Barry produced the single for Colgems, recording it in October 1966 at RCA Victor Studios in New York. Released in November 1966 as the lead single from the album More of the Monkees, it had "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" on the B-side. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks, ending on 31 December 1966, and was the biggest-selling single of 1967. It also topped the UK Singles Chart in early 1967. Neil Diamond recorded his own version, and the song has been covered many times. Smash Mouth's 2001 version, made for the film Shrek, reached number 25 on the Hot 100, and Weezer covered it for Shrek Forever After (2010). Other covers include Robert Wyatt's version (1974) and EMF with Reeves and Mortimer (1995).
