Wives and Lovers is a 1963 song with music by Burt Bacharach and lyrics by Hal David. It was written as a promotional tie-in for the comedy film Wives and Lovers, directed by John Rich and starring Janet Leigh, Van Johnson, Shelley Winters and Martha Hyer, but it does not appear in the film and was an exploitation song. Bacharach and David were asked for a number on the theme of marital infidelity. The song is in the key of E-flat. The best-known recording is by Jack Jones, made in September 1963 for Kapp Records with an orchestra directed by Pete King, with "Toys in the Attic" on the B-side. It won the 1964 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Male, and peaked at No. 14 on the Hot 100 and No. 9 on the Easy Listening chart. Later versions include Frank Sinatra with Count Basie and His Orchestra (1964), Dionne Warwick (1965), Connie Francis and Ella Fitzgerald (both 1966), Andy Williams and Nancy Wilson, as well as many instrumental recordings. It is a pop vocal standard.
