"So Tender" is an instrumental jazz composition for piano trio, written by Keith Jarrett, who is credited as its sole writer. It has no lyrics. The Keith Jarrett Trio, with Gary Peacock on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, recorded it in January 1983. That recording is the original performance of the piece. It was first released in 1985 on the ECM album Standards, Vol. 2, which is classified in the post bop style. The lead sheet is in the key of A. Later versions include recordings by John Basile, Vic Juris, Lynne Arriale, Ulf Wakenius and Tim Ray, in trio, quartet and solo settings. An earlier recording, by Airto Moreira, dates from 1972.
