Haunted Heart is a popular song from 1948, with music by Arthur Schwartz and lyrics by Howard Dietz. It was written for Inside U.S.A., a Broadway revue by Schwartz and Dietz loosely based on John Gunther's book. The revue had its world premiere in Philadelphia on March 29, 1948, opened at the New Century Theatre on April 30, 1948, and then moved to the Majestic Theatre, running 399 performances until February 19, 1949. In the revue's song list the number appears as "Haunted Heart (San Francisco)", sung by John Tyers.
The song was the show's biggest success and its only hit. A 1948 ASCAP strike delayed recordings and radio play. Early recordings include Jo Stafford's from July 1948, and versions by Buddy Clark, Bing Crosby and Guy Lombardo, as well as one by Perry Como with Russ Case and His Orchestra, which was a hit and appears on the 1948 RCA Victor cast album. The song gave its title to a 2005 album by Renée Fleming.
