“Strange Meeting” is an instrumental jazz composition by Bill Frisell, a United States guitarist and composer born in 1951. It has no lyrics and is not a standard. Frisell first recorded it in 1994 for the album This Land, released on Antilles and New Directions, with Don Byron, Billy Drewes, Curtis Fowlkes, Kermit Driscoll and Joey Baron. The album master is classed in the post-bop category. Later recordings have been made by several groups and duos, including Pino Mazzarano and Gianni Lenoci (2010), the Mengamo Trio (2015), Mary Halvorson and Noël Akchoté (2016), Pierluigi Balducci (2020) and Jasper Somsen and Anton Goudsmit (2025). Because the composition has no words, its identity rests on its melody and harmony as each group plays them.
